Evaluation of different fungicides for control of fusarium head blight in wheat inoculated with 3ADON and 15ADON chemotypes of Fusarium graminearum in Canada

چکیده
Fusarium head blight (FHB) continues to threaten the economic sustainability of many small grain producers in Manitoba by causing losses in grain yield and quality. In this 2-year study, four fungicides were tested on two spring wheat cultivars with different levels of resistance to FHB inoculated with 3ADON and 15ADON chemotypes of Fusarium graminearum. All fungicides (prothioconazole, tebuconazole, metconazole and prothioconazole+ tebuconazole) reduced FHB index, per cent Fusarium-damaged kernels (% FDK) and deoxynivalenol (DON) levels and increased yield compared with the non-sprayed control in the moderately resistant cultivar ‘Glenn’. In the highly susceptible cultivar ‘Roblin’, all fungicides reduced FHB index and increased yield compared with the non-sprayed control; however, inconsistent results were observed for FDK and DON. Differences were observed between the two chemotypes for all variables in both years except for FDK and yield in 2010. This study confirmed that host resistance plays an important role in host–pathogen–fungicide interaction. Therefore, the combined effect of growing moderately resistant cultivars with fungicide application can reduce damage caused by FHB even under high FHB severity.

Regional differences in species composition and toxigenic potential among Fusarium head blight isolates from Uruguay indicate a risk of nivalenol contamination in new wheat production areas.
Members of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) are the primary cause of Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat, and frequently contaminate grain with trichothecene mycotoxins that pose a serious threat to food safety and animal health. The species identity and trichothecene toxin potential of 151 FGSC isolates collected from wheat in Uruguay were determined via multilocus genotyping. A...
متن کاملIsolates of Fusarium graminearum collected 40–320 meters above ground level cause Fusarium head blight in wheat and produce trichothecene mycotoxins
The aerobiology of fungi in the genus Fusarium is poorly understood. Many species of Fusarium are important pathogens of plants and animals and some produce dangerous secondary metabolites known as mycotoxins. In 2006 and 2007, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were used to collect Fusarium 40–320 m above the ground at the Kentland Farm in Blacksburg, Virginia. Eleven single-spored iso...
متن کاملPopulation Subdivision of Fusarium graminearum from Barley and Wheat in the Upper Midwestern United States at the Turn of the Century.
Fusarium graminearum, the causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat and barley, is one of the most economically destructive pathogens of these grains worldwide. Recent population genetic studies of the pathogen obtained from wheat in North America supported population subdivision in part correlated with the spectrum of trichothecene mycotoxins (chemotype) produced by individuals withi...
متن کاملAn adaptive evolutionary shift in Fusarium head blight pathogen populations is driving the rapid spread of more toxigenic Fusarium graminearum in North America.
Analysis of Fusarium head blight (FHB) pathogen diversity revealed that 3ADON producing Fusarium graminearum are prevalent in North America and identified significant population structure associated with trichothecene chemotype differences (F(ST)>0.285; P<0.001). In addition, we identified a trichothecene chemotype cline in Canada and documented a recent and significant shift in FHB pathogen co...

Fusarium graminearum is the major causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) in barley and wheat in North America. The fungus not only causes yield loss of the crops but also produces harmful trichothecene mycotoxins [Deoxynivalenol (DON) and its derivatives-3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3ADON) and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15ADON), and nivalenol (NIV)] that contaminate grains. Previous studies showed...
